A joint initiative by the Institute for Compassion and the Chiemseewinkel Clinic
Background
The period of life between adolescence and early adulthood is marked by far-reaching developmental challenges. Young people make decisions about vocational training, college, careers, relationships, and how to shape their personal lives. At the same time, they navigate a social reality characterized by rapid change, constant access to information, social comparison, and growing uncertainties.
Social media often intensifies the pressure to constantly improve oneself, to be visible, and to live up to others’ expectations. Studies show links between heavy social media use, social comparison, loneliness, symptoms of anxiety and depression, and reduced mental well-being. Young adults, in particular, are increasingly reporting stress, a sense of disorientation, and worries about the future.
At the same time, recent surveys point to a growing need for mental health support among young people. Stressors such as pressure to perform, uncertainty about one’s future, loneliness, and the effects of societal crises can contribute to the onset of mental illness or exacerbate existing stress.
Challenges Faced by Young Adults
Many young adults experience:
- Uncertainty when making important life decisions
- Feeling overwhelmed by the multitude of possible life paths
- Pressure to perform and constantly improve
- Fear of making mistakes or missing out on opportunities (“Fear of Missing Out”)
- Self-doubt and uncertainty about their identity
- Loneliness despite digital connectivity
- Difficulties coping with stress, crises, and emotional strain
These challenges can contribute to an increased risk of depression, anxiety disorders, burnout, and other mental health conditions.
Objective of the Program
The joint program developed by the Institute for Compassion and the Chiemseewinkel Clinic aims to strengthen young adults’ mental health in a sustainable way and to provide them with effective support during a crucial phase of their lives.
